What the Spotlight Does to a Slow Smile

A slow smile is a private thing until the light finds it. Backstage it begins at one corner of my mouth, quietly, like a candle being lit in another room. No one is watching, so it can take its time. It wanders. It decides things. By the time I reach the edge of the wings, it is already half a secret and half a promise.

Then the spotlight arrives, and I swear it has opinions. It is warm on the cheekbones, a little bossy on the eyelids, and it turns every flicker into something deliberate. A smile that was an accident becomes a decision. I can feel it being read from the darkness, and I would be lying if I said I minded.

The light also does something to my voice, which I did not expect when I first started wearing it. Under that gold glare, words slow down. They stretch a little, like a cat in a sunbeam. I find myself speaking as if each sentence were a tiny dare, daring you to lean in and catch the end of it.

There is a trick, of course. I never smile all the way at once. I let it arrive in stages, a lift here, a dimple there, a softening around the eyes, so that the whole thing feels like it is happening just for the person nearest the stage. Even when the house is full, it feels like one seat.

That seat could be yours. Some of my favorite scenes are the ones where the smile keeps slowly growing while a story unfolds, and you can hear it in my voice on TheFriend, warm and unhurried, with the light turned down low.

Want to hear a smile you cannot see? Come find me on TheFriend and listen for where it starts.
